Advanced Dressing For Men: The Trend of Suspenders In the eighteen-century trousers and pants were held up by suspenders. The suspenders were attached to trousers using buttonholes since they were made of ribbon strips. Back then they were worn as undergarments, and it was never heard of to spot them, as that was a sign of outright indecency, so they had to be concealed underneath other pieces of clothing. It is in the nineteenth century that braces (modern day suspenders) were introduced. Mr Albert was the first designer to manufacture the brace. They were attached with leather loops. There is a range of various suspenders that have been designed. However the categorization of these belts is dependent on two things; according to the shape formed at the back and the method of attachment. For instance the earliest designs mainly formed an H at the back by joining the braces. However, these designs have evolved with the latest designs forming a Y which was preceded by an X. The second type of categorization was dependent according to their attachment to the trousers and the earliest designs were attached using buttons. Later, leather loops were used to make an attachment to the trousers using buttonholes and finally, suspenders were attached to trousers by use of metal clasps. It is worth noting that even the materials used to make them have also changed. for instance the materials used have evolved from ribbons to woven wool. This material was also known as box cloth. Despite using different materials all suspenders served the same purpose; holding up trousers. It was only high waist trousers that were considered fashionable then, and therefore belts were not typical. The trousers were high-waist that belts could not be used; only braces were suitable.
